Hosts John Moulton and Sean Gowing pull up a chair with Glenrock-Converse County Game Warden Cody Bish for a straight-shooting, no-BS conversation about everything hunters and anglers in the area need to know right now.
The Big Topics
Blue Tongue & EHD wipeout – A nasty outbreak of hemorrhagic disease (spread by biting midges) hammered whitetail deer and some antelope this fall. Cody confirms: “You’re seeing way fewer whitetails than normal.” Mule deer have largely dodged the bullet. Cold weather will end it, but expect possible tag reductions next year.
CWD update – Still present, still being monitored. Cody reminds everyone to check the regs for mandatory sampling areas (they move every year) and says the Casper office is always ready to take heads for free testing.
Carcass disposal – Huge shout-out to the Town of Glenrock and the Dallas Safari Club-Casper Chapter for funding the big roll-off dumpster behind the PD during October. One giant bin lasted the whole month and kept potentially infected carcasses out of ditches.
Poaching – “Most folks are just trying to do the right thing and put meat in the freezer.” Violations happen, but they’re the exception, not the rule.
License trends – Wyoming hunting is hotter than ever (thanks, social media). Non-resident applications keep climbing, but residents are still protected: 80 % of deer/antelope tags stay in-state on the initial draw.
Youth & new hunter programs – Hunter Ed is back in the Glenrock intermediate school (huge props to Heath Hayes and Principal Horn), plus Cody runs the annual 7th-grade Outdoor Day. The state’s Mentor Program is a game-changer: adults can take a kid hunting without them having completed Hunter Ed yet.
Burning listener questions– Yes, wardens can check your license on private land if fish can access public water or if you’re visibly hunting/fishing. You are legally required to show proof of license on your person (digital is fine, but have it ready—no service = awkward).– Walk-in areas that say “no rifle/pistol” are still open to archery and shotgun slugs.– River trespass rules: stay literally in the water or have permission. The second you anchor or step on private streambed, you can be told to kick rocks.
Fun Stuff
Wyoming state-record fish trivia (everyone bombed it):Brown trout – 25.81 lb (Flaming Gorge)Common carp – 34.94 lb (Pilot Butte Reservoir)Lake trout – 50 lb (tied, Jackson Lake & Flaming Gorge)Flathead catfish – 22.4 lb (caught right here in the Platte in Glenrock!)
Vibe
Relaxed, informative, and packed with exactly the kind of intel you wish you had before heading to the field. Cody is the definition of approachable—he repeatedly says, “Just call or text me; if you don’t have my number, you know someone who does.”
At about 50 minutes, Episode 3 is required listening for anyone who hunts or fishes Converse County this year—or just wants to know why there are suddenly fewer whitetails staring at them from the cottonwoods.
