Episode Recap: Civics Bee Comes to Glenrock

This episode focused on bringing the National Civics Bee to Glenrock and why it matters for local youth. Sean sat down with Kim from Elevate and Preston from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Wyoming to explain how students can participate and what opportunities the program creates.

The Civics Bee is open to sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, including public, private, and homeschooled students. Participants begin by writing a short essay identifying a community issue, proposing a solution, and connecting it to civic principles and the founding values of the United States.

Essays are judged to select the top 20 students in the region, who advance to a live Civics Bee, tentatively scheduled for April 24 at the Glenrock Intermediate School auditorium. During the live event, students answer civics questions, present their ideas, and respond to judges.

Local winners receive cash prizes and advance to the state competition in Cheyenne, with the state winner moving on to the national Civics Bee in Washington, D.C., where major scholarship awards are available.

Kim shared that hosting the Civics Bee took more than a year of planning and coordination with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Preston explained how the Boys and Girls Club will support students with after-school help, curriculum guidance, and confidence building.

The episode emphasized that the Civics Bee helps kids think critically, engage with their communities, and gain public speaking experience while learning how local government decisions affect everyday life.

Sign-up information will be posted soon, with updates shared through Elevate and community channels.
